Chromatin Structure

Chromatin structure plays a variety of roles in eukaryotes, ranging from the structural organization of the genome provided by higher-order structures, to the facilitation of transcription factors and remodeling within individual gene promoters.

The overall goal of our program is to gain insight into the relationships among the structural features of gene promoter DNA and its chromatin (primarily Adh from maize and Arabidopsis), and the regulation of gene transcription in plants. Our operational definition of chromatin includes DNA plus all of the associated proteins and structures that create the biological context within which a gene must act. While this definition includes transcription factors, such factors are not the sole focus of our research. Instead, we prefer a broader in vivo nuclear context within which to view transcription factor data, including the impact of genome packaging and organization has on these processes.
