The Horticultural Sciences Department at the University of Florida excels at the land-grant mission of research, teaching, and extension in fruits and vegetables. The department offers a unique classroom experience combined with many hands-on activities at our teaching farms, laboratories and greenhouses. World class faculty encourage critical thinking and give students personalized attention at a University of close to 50,000 students. Our Horticultural Sciences Department is ranked number 1 in faculty productivity by the Chronicle of Higher Education. Our research, teaching, and cooperative extension programs develop fundamental and applied knowledge, with the ultimate goal of enhancing conventional and organic food crop production and promoting sustainable agriculture.

Research Overview:
  • We investigate plant growth, development, and senescence using genetics, genomics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and physiology.
  • We develop superior fruit and vegetable crop varieties with state-of-the-art plant breeding and biotechnology.
  • We seek solutions to current production/cultural problems and develop new approaches to increase the efficiency of production, harvest, and postharvest handling for the fruit and vegetable industries.
Teaching Overview:
  • Our undergraduate program offers a diverse choice of specializations, ranging from organic or conventional crop production to plant molecular and cellular biology. Our program is highly respected nation-wide and our graduates readily find employment.
  • Our Master of Science and Ph.D. degree programs offer flexibility, allowing for a customized degree program to fit all research and career goals.
Extension Overview:
  • We develop and provide research-based recommendations for technology transfer to the commercial fruit and vegetable industry through electronic resources, interactive workshops, and collaboration with county extension faculty.
